About the role
BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is Australia's largest coal producer with currently eight operational mine sites and a coal loading port in Central Queensland. As the world's largest seaborne coking coal supplier, and part of the BHP Billiton group, BMA is uniquely poised to offer experience and career development opportunities difficult to find elsewhere.
Reporting to the Superintendent Operations Planning, as the Drill and Blast Engineer you will be engaged in providing drill and blast design, scheduling and execution direction around the +1 to 12 week time frame to our Peak Downs Operation. Use your already solid Drill and Blast skills and experience in this challenging mine planning role to develop effective working relationships with the operational and medium-term planning teams, in order to ensure the efficient execution of your designs and schedules.
This is a great opportunity to hone your drill and blast skills as you gain exposure to a variety of drill and blast challenges such as variable mine geology, through seam blasting, rollout of new Blast-Logic system technology and planning for 6 overburden drills and 2 blast crews (including nightshift loading). You will also have access to a supportive, inclusive and results-oriented leadership team.
This role works on a continuous 8 on 6 off roster, working back to back with another peer.
In this role you will:
- Prepare Drill and Blast designs and schedules to maximise downstream productivity
- Build relationships with and obtain buy in from the operations teams for D&B designs and schedules
- Communicate the designs and schedules to Operations for implementation;
- Follow and continue to improve the D&B Planning standards and processes;
- Identify and implement Mine Planning improvement initiatives;
- Assist in the development of the drill and blast budget;
- Build relationships and work closely with other mine planning sub functions (Drill & Blast, Draglines, Coal Quality, geology, survey and medium term planning)
As the successful candidate, you will have a tertiary education in Engineering and previous experience working in D&B planning roles is a must. Operational experience in D&B would also be highly regarded.
You will also have strong communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to build relationships across departments and to communicate at all levels. A strong working knowledge of Vulcan, XACT, Microsoft Office, and Drill and Blast software packages are essential.
